Planning complex paediatric heart surgeries
58,000 children are born in Norway every year. Approximately 460 of them are born with heart defects.
Some of these children do well with minor treatment, while some children, who have more complex heart defects, may need extensive and repeated surgery. To perform surgery on a heart no larger than a walnut requires skill, nerve, and experience. To be able to explore a defect in 3D and plan the solution can be vital.
In TruHeart we use the Microsoft HoloLens to display the holograms of children's hearts. The holograms are created using standard CT and MR images of the hearts with the purpose of being used during planning meetings between the surgeons. The different functions in the TruHeart application allow the surgeons to agree on the best surgery option and the safest course of action. The surgeons can also use the holograms to do training for the surgery.
