Giving orthopaedic surgeons x-ray vision

THE CHALLENGE

Did you know that orthopaedic surgeries account for about 60% of all surgeries worldwide?

Orthopaedists diagnose, treat and perform surgery based on traditional x-rays. They also use these images to communicate with patients.

Figuring out what is wrong and exactly where the patient experiences pain is hard when looking at static, two-dimensional images. It also hard for the clinician to imagine how the images relate to the moving body.

OrthoNav

THE SOLUTION

In OrthoNav, we use HoloLens to display holograms of the patient’s hipbones, to virtually diagnose the patient and plan the surgery. We also use the application as an aid during orthopaedic surgery.

The goal of OrthoNav is to improve the diagnostic process and treatment of complex hip and pelvis diseases by giving the surgeon “x-ray vision”.

By using optical sensors placed on the patient we are able to see how the holograms move on the Hololens in relation to the actual movement of the patient's legs, arms, hands, feet or back. In this way we achieve a kind of x-ray vision.
