Localization of tumor in the liver in less time and giving equal accuracy when using holograms

Researchers working with the HoloViz project, have published a study on the increased spatial understanding of liver anatomy using holograms. The study shows equal accuracy of localization of the tumor in the liver was achieved in only ¼ of the time using holograms compared to using MRI.

In the study, conventional methods of viewing magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) scans to understand the patient’s anatomy before surgery was compared to 3D models viewed using HoloLens. To show holograms, researchers used the developed application for the HoloViz project to visualization liver tumors in different locations inside a 3D liver model. Participants of the study explored liver models with increased depth perception and could freely move around the model to better understand the location of the tumors. Spending less time to locate the tumor allows clinicians to have more time to make a potentially more accurate and safe decision. In a more extensive use of holograms, before and during surgery, it may improve safety, decrease operating time and improve the use of resources. This will be explored and tested in future studies from the same research group.

This study is one of the first of its kind to compare conventional clinical routines to the rapidly growing arena of mixed reality applications in health care.
